DESCRIPTION

Wonderful pine infant's cradle in the original red paint. Fastened with round and square cut nails. An ink inscription on the bottom reads "Made for / my mother Ellura Rackliff Hamlin / by her father / She was 83 when she died."

Some research via findagrave reveals that Ellura Rackliff Hamlin lived in Rockland, Maine, when her son Oliver Rackliff Hamlin was born in 1901. That dates the cradle to about 1875 or 1876. A clipping from the Rockland Courier Gazette, dated December 28th, 1937, has Ellura Hamlin as chair person of the Rockland branch of the Grand Army of the Republic.

CONDITION

Overall excellent. Some drying splits in the hood (visible in the images). Well-worn old painted surface. A CLASSIC MAINE FOLK CRADLE MADE BY A LOVING FATHER FOR HIS DAUGHTER.
